Surf’s Up or Sellout? Boca Raton Split Over $60M Surf Park

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Boca Raton is riding a wave of controversy after the city’s Beach & Park District gave top marks to a $60 million surf park proposal that could transform part of North Park into a year-round surf destination.

A Vision for the Future

Developers Cheyne Cotrell and Matt Oliveira of Boca Surf Park LLC want to lease 20 acres of public land for 99 years and share 3% of revenues with the district for the first 15 years. They say the park would bring millions in local economic growth and 80 to 100 new jobs.

Not Everyone’s on Board

While many residents see the project as an exciting step toward innovation, others fear it’s a bad trade-off — replacing green space with a commercial attraction.

Developers insist a traffic study found “minimal impact,” and they’ve promised eco-friendly landscaping and limited hours to keep the peace.

What’s Next

The district is still reviewing feasibility studies and gathering community feedback before voting. Supporters call it progress; critics call it a sellout.

Either way, Boca Raton’s surf park debate is making waves — and the city’s next move could define how it balances recreation, growth, and the community’s identity for decades to come. for more information on Boca Surf Park: Go to  https://bocasurfpark.com/
